Bengaluru–Mumbai Travel Time to Drop by 6 Hours with New Superfast Train via Hubballi
A major boost to intercity travel is on the horizon, as the Indian Railways has confirmed plans to launch a superfast train connecting Bengaluru and Mumbai via Hubballi, significantly cutting down travel time between the two metro cities. What currently takes nearly 23 hours by rail could soon take just 18 hours, marking a six-hour reduction and offering passengers a faster, more comfortable journey.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed the development in a letter addressed to Union Minister and Dharwad MP Pralhad Joshi, stating that the proposed train will operate through key Karnataka cities — Davangere, Hubballi, and Belagavi — before proceeding to Mumbai. The route has been a long-standing demand from citizens of North Karnataka, who have been seeking better train connectivity to the financial capital for over a decade.
A Much-Needed Route for Karnataka Travelers
Currently, there is just one direct train — the Udyan Express — linking Bengaluru and Mumbai. The train, though popular, takes close to 23 hours to complete its journey and often runs at full capacity. With tickets booked weeks in advance, last-minute travelers are usually left scrambling for alternatives such as buses or flights.
The introduction of this new superfast service is expected to greatly ease passenger congestion while improving regional connectivity. The Hubballi route, which passes through major growth centers in central and northern Karnataka, has been selected to maximize accessibility and passenger benefit. Though this alignment is slightly longer — about 1,227 kilometers compared to the 1,136-kilometer Guntakal route — railway officials say it can still achieve the reduced travel time thanks to fewer halts and upgraded track speeds.
Key Route and Stations
According to early plans, the train will likely begin its journey from Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal (SMVT), Bengaluru, and terminate at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), Mumbai. The proposed stops include Tumakuru, Davangere, Hubballi, and Belagavi within Karnataka.
Bangalore Central MP P. C. Mohan shared that the journey will be “18 hours or less, on par with premium bus services.” This means passengers can expect a faster, more predictable, and convenient train travel experience between the two economic hubs.
The route selection is also significant because Hubballi is emerging as a major railway junction in South India, serving as a connection point for trains from Goa, Pune, and Hyderabad. By routing the new train through Hubballi, the Indian Railways aims to strengthen the region’s role in the national railway network.

He also hinted that the Railways is exploring similar dedicated trains to Delhi and Patna, given the heavy demand for travel from Bengaluru to North India.

The speed improvement will primarily come from limiting the number of stops and enhancing track efficiency. The new train will likely have just four to five halts within Karnataka before heading into Maharashtra. Railways officials are confident that this streamlined operation will help achieve the target travel time of 18 hours, despite the route being slightly longer.
The Railways has also been investing in track doubling, electrification, and signal modernization, which collectively enhance the average speed of trains. Once the new service begins, travelers between Bengaluru and Mumbai will have a competitive alternative to both long-distance buses and flights.
